2 killed in US helicopter crash in Pakistan

Two United States military personnel were killed when their helicopter crashed in Pakistan on Friday night, CNN reported.

The helicopter was in Pakistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, the US-led war on terrorism that is being conducted in neighbouring Afghanistan.

Pakistan has allowed US forces access to three air bases in the country.

The helicopter was on a mission in support of Army Rangers working in the Kandahar region in southern Afghanistan. Pakistani military officials said it crashed in Baluchistan province, bordering Afghanistan.

The Al Jazeera television network reported that the Taleban claimed to have shot down the helicopter, but there was no independent confirmation.

Taleban spokesman Suhail Shaheen claimed the aircraft was shot in Afghan air space, but crashed in Pakistani territory.

Some others were also injured in the crash, but the defence department did not have the exact number.

President George W Bush, Jr, who is attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Council meeting in Shanghai, China, expressed his condolences to the families of the dead servicemen and said their deaths in a just cause would not go in vain.
