US Secretary of State Colin Powell's 'endorsement' of the Pakistani proposal to include some moderate Taleban elements in a new broad-based government in Kabul to ensure continued influence of Islamabad in Afghanistan has angered the opposition Northern Alliance.
The anti-Taleban opposition already suspects that the US refusal to provide air cover is linked to its unwillingness to let the Alliance march into Kabul before a broad-based government is established, a media report said.
The statements in Islamabad by Powell and President Pervez Musharraf "shows how deep a hand Pakistan still has in Afghan affairs," The Wall Street quoted Northern Alliance spokesman in Washington Haron Amin as saying.
The suspicions deepened after an unconfirmed report emerged that the Taleban's Foreign Minister Wakil Ahmed Muttawakil had met secretly with Pakistani officials in Islamabad to urge a halt to air strikes so that the moderates in the militia could hand over suspected terrorist Osama bin Laden, the paper said.
