United States President George W Bush said on Monday that Senate majority leader Tom Daschle had received and opened a letter laced with anthrax.
The president said the envelope was examined by experts and the staffers who were exposed to it were being given medical treatment.
Speaking to the press at the White House, as he welcomed Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, Bush said, "His (Daschle) office received a letter and it had anthrax in it. The letter was field-tested. And the staffers who were exposed are being treated."
The president said there might be some possible link between Saudi renegade Osama bin Laden and the recent flurry of anthrax cases in the US.
"I wouldn't put it past him (Laden) but we don't have any hard evidence," Bush said.
