Powell's visit will add insult to injury: Pak parties

Fundamentalist religious parties in Pakistan on Friday called for a nationwide strike to protest against the United-States lead bombings against the Taleban regime in Afghanistan and the forthcoming visit of US Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Fifteen Islamic parties, in a joint statement issued in Lahore, said, "Powell coming to Pakistan will add insult to injury."

"The nation will not tolerate him stepping on to Pakistan soil."

"We appeal to the people of Pakistan and the traders to express solidarity on this occasion and close their businesses, markets and shops," the statement said.

"Let us prove to the world that Pakistan will never allow the US to succeed in its designs in this region, no matter how big sacrifice they have to offer in this regard," it added.

The parties issuing the statement included the Jamaat-e-Islami, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam and the Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan.
