Pakistan to get additional aid from US, UN and World Bank

Addressing the Senate Foreign Relations Sub-committee in Washington, Rocca said, "Pakistan has been a generous country of first asylum for millions of Afghans since 1979."

"We acknowledge that Pakistan has borne a heavy social and economic cost for its generosity. It has legitimate political and security concerns as a result of large-scale refugee inflows."

"Yet, Pakistan has given its unconditional support to the international community in combating terrorism. We will work with Pakistan and UN agencies to help Pakistan shoulder the economic and social costs of the current crisis," she said.

"We have already lifted many of the sanctions, and are now assembling a package of economic assistance for Pakistan" Rocca added.

Meanwhile, World Bank president James Wolfenson met Pakistan Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz on Wednesday to discuss the ongoing reform programme and economic outlook for the country, a release from the bank said.

According to the release, Wolfenson praised Pakistan for the its reform measures, and said, "As the country faces a particularly challenging period, we will be there to help it keep that reform programme on track."
