The United Nations has suspended its food aid convoys into Afghanistan for the second day running, following the killing of four employees of a UN-affiliated agency.
International Red Cross representative Peter Philips was quoted by Online news agency as saying that relief operations would resume once the situation improves.
The United Nations also appealed for the protection of all civilians in Afghanistan.
A UN spokesman said convoys already inside Afghanistan would continue onward to their destination if it was safe to move. But no new convoys would cross the border until further notice.
United States Air Force jets bombarded Kandahar and Herat towns of Afghanistan for the third night in a row on Tuesday.
Bombs dropped down on the two important towns in the southern and western part of the country, respectively, late in the evening.
Meanwhile, six Japanese C-130 Hercules aircraft carrying relief goods for Afghan refugees arrived in Pakistan on Tuesday.
Japanese Ambassador to Pakistan Sadaaki Numata handed over the consignment to Hasim Utkan, representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Pakistan.
The relief goods, comprising tents, blankets, water tanks, sleeping mats and plastic sheets will be distributed by UNHCR as part of the international humanitarian relief operations it has been conducting for Afghan refugees in Pakistan.
