The United Nations confirmed reports of civilian casualties on Tuesday's pre-dawn raid on Kabul and Kandahar by US-led forces.
The four killed in the US bombardment were affiliated to a UN mine-clearing agency, and were killed when the US planes bombarded Kabul.
The deaths were the first civilian casualties independently confirmed in the three-day-old air campaign.
UN spokesperson in Islamabad, Stephanie Bunker, confirmed the deaths of four workers.
"All four died on the spot," Bunker told a news conference in Islamabad. "Pieces of their bodies are still to be recovered from the wreckage of building in which they were residing," she said.
The building was located not far from a Taleban communications tower that may have been a target in last night's raid.
