Bonn: Afghan factions may reach agreement soon

The United Nations on Friday said that the Afghan groups meeting in Bonn, Germany, would strike a deal on an interim political set up in Kabul by Saturday, even as reports said Burhannuddin Rabbani, the leader of the Northern Alliance, would meet Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf soon

"We will be meeting again tonight (Friday), and hope then to finalise an agreement of principle," UN spokesman Ahmad Fawzi told the media.

He said the Afghan factions were still aiming to reach an accord within the timeframe of three to five days set out at the beginning of the conference.

"That doesn't mean at the crack of dawn. Tomorrow can mean midnight tomorrow," Fawzi said.

Meanwhile, reports said Rabbani would soon meet Musharraf, in what would be the first interaction between the two leaders since the Northern Alliance ousted the Taleban from Kabul.

One of Rabbani's aide told a news agency that Iran was organising the meeting.

Speaking at a press conference later, Rabbani said he sought close cooperation with all of Afghanistan's neighbours.

"We would like to have friendly relations with our neighbours. We will maintain this idea. There should be mutual cooperation," he said.
