Ignoring United States pressure to go slow on recognising the Northern Alliance government of Burhannuddin Rabbani, Russia on Thursday night vowed to extend its support to the de-facto rulers of Afghanistan.

Russia's defiance of the repeated US requests came hours before the arrival of the US special coordinator for Afghanistan, Richard Haass.
