Afghanistan's envoy to the United Nations has assured the world body that the Northern Alliance favours a democratic set up in Kabul and would not monopolise political power.
Addressing the 189-member General Assembly, Ravan Farhadi said the Alliance supports a broad-based government on which all factions are represented.
"It is our sincere hope that the people of Afghanistan will democratically decide in the near future what form of political system they desire," he said.
He described the takeover of Kabul by the Northern Alliance as a "victory not only for the people of Afghanistan, but also for the international community and our shared campaign against terrorism."
On the alliance's decision to police Kabul following reports of looting and plundering of the National Bank and warehouses of aid agencies by "retreating Taleban", he said, they had no option but to send a "limited" number of police in Kabul to control chaos and mayhem after the Afghan militia fled from Kabul.
Farhadi represents the Burhanuddin Rabbani government recognised by the United Nations. Rabbani was president of the country from 1992 to 1996 when Taleban captured Kabul.
