Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday once again reiterated that he would request United States President George Bush to halt the military campaign in Afghanistan during the Muslim holy month Ramzan.
"I will take up the matter with President Bush when I meet him in New York," he told a press conference at Istanbul airport during a stopover on way to Paris.
"One would wish that the operation does not go on during Ramzan because it will have a negative effects on the Islamic world," he was quoted as saying.
Musharraf's comments followed reports from London that British Prime Minister Tony Blair headed for Washington to hold urgent consultations with Bush before he received the Pakistani president.
Musharraf's insistence on a halt in the bombing campaign during the holy Muslim month was reported to have the backing of Saudi Arabia. Media reports said Saudi prince and Foreign Minister Saud Al Faisal, during his surprise visit to Islamabad few days ago, urged Musharraf to take up the matter strongly with Bush and Blair as his regime feared an upheaval at Mecca if the bombing continued.
