In a bid to get greater Russian cooperation in what is turning out to be a protracted US-led war against terrorism, United States Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld headed for Russia on Friday night.
Rumsfeld is expected ask for greater Russian military cooperation in his meeting with Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov.
Rumsfeld, after his Russian trip, would make quick stopovers in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan and India.
The trip comes as the US military was struggling to beef up its special forces on the ground to help the opposition Northern Alliance advance against Taleban forces defending the capital Kabul and key towns in the north.
The Pentagon also reported for the first time indications of fighting in the south between the Taleban and opponents among the region's ethnic Pushtoon tribes.
"I've seen reports that there are tribes who are not supportive of the Taleban in the south," said Rear Admiral John Stufflebeem.
