Britain continued its crackdown on terrorist funding giving financial institutions a wide-ranging new list, on Friday, of terror organisations whose assets it wants frozen.
Working with American authorities, the British treasury had previously released two lists of groups believed connected to suspected September 11 terror mastermind Osama bin Laden and his Al Qaida network, and of individuals in Britain thought to have ties to Al Qaida.
The new list of 25 groups includes Babbar Khalsa, a Sikh group, International Sikh Youth Federation, Pakistan-based militant outfit Lashkar-e-Tayiba, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and Japanese cult Aum Shinrikyo.
"The ready supply of finance is the lifeblood of modern terrorism," Treasury Chief Gordon Brown said in a statement.
"Those who finance terrorism are as guilty as those who commit it... we will do whatever is necessary to deprive terrorists of the funds they rely on. Those named on Friday have committed or pose a real risk of committing or funding acts of terrorism," he added.
"They will find no safe haven for their assets in the UK. I expect all financial institutions to check their records and freeze the assets of those named, wherever found," he said.
Since September 11, the Treasury has frozen 63 million pounds (92 million dollars) in 36 accounts.
