US jets resume raids on Kabul, Bush satisfied with progress, Americans unsure

United States aircraft on Friday resumed night attacks on Afghanistan's capital Kabul, targeting the airport in the northern part of the city, even as US President George Bush asserted that there would be no let up in the attacks during the holy month of Ramadan, though he left the final decision to his commanders.

Bombs were dropped before the warplanes flew out of earshot, Kabul residents said.

There was no response from the ruling Taleban's anti-aircraft guns.

"My own personal attitude is that the enemy won't rest during Ramadan and neither will we. We're going to pursue this war until we achieve our objectives," Bush told reporters in the White House Rose Garden in Washington.

He said he was 'very satisfied' with the way the war on terrorism, including military strikes on Afghanistan, was going.

For all the bravado that their president flaunts, the average American seems to have lost his nerve about the anti-terrorism campaign.

Some polls in the country showed that the percentage of people who think the US will be able to capture Saudi extremist Osama bin Laden has declined since the campaign began in October and so has the percentage of people who think the impressive international coalition cobbled up by the US will hold in the long run.
