US Secretary of State Colin Powell will undertake a two-day visit to China later this month to firm up shaky bilateral ties and prepare for President George W Bush's first state visit to the Communist country in October.
Announcing Powell's visit from July 28, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said the US leader will be the guest of Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan.
Before the visit, Tang and Powell are scheduled to meet in Hanoi on the sidelines of the Association of South East Asian Nations meet.
The two had a telephonic conversation on June 28, the first since the spy plane stand-off strained relations between the two countries.
Later, on July 5, Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Bush spoke to each other on phone, the first such exchange after Bush assumed office in January.
During the talk, Jiang noted that bilateral relations had encountered "difficulties" in the recent past. He was referring to the spy plane incident, Washington's arms sale to Taiwan and Bush's meeting with the Dalai Lama.
