United States Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said around 50 fighters of the Al Qaeda had surrendered, as the American and Afghan forces advanced two kilometres in the Tora Bora mountains of eastern Afghanistan.
"The forces on the ground near Tora Bora have advanced about two kilometres, which is a heck of lot in that kind of terrain," he said.
AC-130 gunships attacked cornered Al Qaeda forces and hundreds of US bombs were unloaded on caves, tunnels and fighters, he said.
Meanwhile, the opposition forces in Tora Bora had captured members of the Al Qaeda, US Central Command chief General Tommy Franks said.
"Al Qaeda (fighters) were captured today (Friday)," he said at a briefing in Tampa, Florida.
"We have not yet taken any from opposition leaders and when we do, we will keep them either inside Afghanistan or out to sea for interrogation and exploitation."
Once prisoners are handed to US custody, they will be interrogated in Afghanistan or taken aboard one of the US ships operating in the region.
Franks said the opposition forces had seized some documents while moving through Tora Bora, but their details were unknown.
