Bush all set to dump ABM Treaty

US President George W Bush has vowed not to let the 1972 Anti-ballistic Missile Treaty come in the way of deployment of a missile shield, amid reports that Washington has informed Moscow about a soon to be given six months' notice for withdrawing from the treaty.

"We must move beyond the 1972 Ballistic Missile Treaty, a treaty that was written in a different era for a different enemy," Bush said at Citadel, the State military college in Charleston, South Carolina.

"America and our allies must not be bound to the past. We must be able to build the defences we need against the enemies of the 21st century," he said.

Reports from Moscow said Secretary of State Colin Powell has already informed Russia that Bush would soon give a six months' notice to get out of the ABM Treaty.

He said the US was determined to build "limited and effective defences" against a missile attack.

"Our enemies seek every chance and every mean to do harm to our country, our forces and our friends and we will not permit it," he said.

To meet the new threats, Bush said the national security advisor and the homeland security director have been told to develop a comprehensive strategy on proliferation.

"We will strengthen non-proliferation treaties and toughen export controls" working with other countries, he said.
