Britain to lead Afghan stabilisation force: Reports

Britain will lead an international peacekeeping force in Afghanistan, newspaper reports said on Monday.

The Daily Telegraph said the announcement to this effect would be made during a visit by US Secretary of State Colin Powell and added that Britain would contribute 3,000 troops to the force.

The Financial Times said: "The force, which would consist of at least 4,000 soldiers, would operate in advance of a multinational peacekeeping force to be sent within three months."

The Times said Britain expected to send between 800 and 1,000 troops to lead a multinational peacekeeping force in Afghanistan in the next fortnight.
