Unlike most Indian tragedies where, after the shock and the government subsidies, the victims get virtually no justice at all, the survivors of the Uphaar cinema tragedy have fought back. Against the theatre owner's alleged negligence. Against governmental callousness. Against every factor that destroyed 59 lives.

The Association of the Victims of Uphaar Tragedy, an organisation sired by grief and anger, is unique in contemporary India. Chindu Sreedharan discovered how amidst the agony, the sleepless nights and the everyday trauma, the AVUT has worked tirelessly to ensure justice for the ones they have lost forever, to ensure that such a tragedy never happens in India again.
