Sri Lankan batsman used bigger bat: ICC match referee

A Sri Lankan batsman, ICC match referee Bob Simpson disclosed today, had used a broader blade during his side's first innings against India in the Mohali Test.

At the end of the second day's play, 'Simmo' said, ''one of the umpires pointed out that a Sri Lankan was using a broader bat during the innings against India.'' He, however, refused to identify the player.

When measured, 'Simmo' said it was found that the bat was indeed broader than that of the specifications laid down by the ICC. Following this, all the bats being used by both teams were measured. Both teams assured him that they would adhere to the rules.

According to the latest rules, 'Simmo' revealed, that if a team bowled its quota of 90 overs in a day before time, play would end there. Until now, play was to go on till regulation time even if a team finished its quota of 90 overs in a day.
