Paes, Bhupati upset third seeded pair

The Indian duo of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupati began their campaign at the year-ending ATP World Doubles Championships at Hartford, on Wednesday, with an upset.

In their opening match, the Indian pair defeated the number three ranked pair of South African Ellis Ferreira and American Patrick Galbraith in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.

Meanwhile, top seeds Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge of Australia lost their first two games before overpowering eighth-seeded Americans Donald Johnson and Francisco Montana, 6-4, 6-1, in just 64 minutes.

In other round robin action, second seeds Jacco Eltingh and Paul Haarhuis of the Netherlands defeated seventh seeds Mark Knowles of the Bahamas and Canadian Daniel Nestor, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1).

And the fourth-seeded American duo of Rick Leach and Jonathan Stark won their opening match, defeating Sebastien Lareau of Canada and Alex O'Brien, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
