Jaspal Rana bang on target

The 4th Videocon National Games now on at the Kanteerava Stadium in Bangalore came alight on Sunday when Jaspal Rana equalled the world record in the centre fire pistol shooting event.

Rana, who two years earlier had again equalled the world record in this category, had a thin time of it in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics - mainly because centrefire pistol is not an Olympic discipline, and Rana found himself competing in the rapidfire event, in which he has little practise.

Back to his favourite event, Rana shot a world record equalling tally of 590, coming up with a sequence of 98, 99, 96, 99, 99 - a stunning sequence that, in the process, broke the existing Asian mark by one point to create a new record.

The performance also helped Delhi to a gold medal - their eighth, in the ongoing National Games.
