Anand takes lead in Credit Suisse tournament

Vishwanathan Anand outwitted Yannick Pelletier in the fifth round of the Credit Suisse Grandmasters Chess Tournament at Biel, Switzerland, on Sunday, to move into the lead.

The Indian grandmaster pulled off a quick win over the lowest ranked player in the tournament - Pelletier is merely an international master in a field loaded with grandmasters - to pull ahead of FIDE world champion Anatoly Karpov, who won the title last year.

Karpov, meanwhile, was held to a draw by Swiss GM Vadim Milov, playing white. Interestingly, Milov in this tournament had earlier held Anand to a draw while playing white.

Boris Gelfand of Belarus and Joel Lautier of France also agreed to a draw after just 21 moves.

At the end of the fifth round, Anand has four points to take solo lead, followed by Karpov with 3.5, Gelfand with 3.5, Lautier and Milov with 2.5 each and Pelletier with 0.5.
