Rain dampens Women's World Cup inaugural

The sixth Hero Honda Women's World Cup got off to a damp start on Tuesday, when the inaugural fixture between hosts India and Sri Lanka was washed out without a ball being bowled.

Heavy overnight rain turned the Firozeshah Kotla, in New Delhi, into a swamp.

Umpires SK Bansal and RC Sharma carried out two inspections. The first was just before scheduled start of play, the second at 11.30 am.

They then consulted the rival captains, Pramila Bhat of India and Vanessa Bowen of Sri Lanka. And, with their consent, called off the match.

Both teams were awarded three points apiece.
