Australia have pulled out of this month's squash world international doubles championships in India because of security concerns.

Squash Australia chief executive Gary O'Donnell said the team had reluctantly withdrawn from the event, starting in Chennai on December 15, after consulting with the Australian government.

"The scale of the recent Mumbai attacks and the stark warning from the Australian Government left us with no option but to withdraw," O'Donnell said in a statement on Tuesday.

"Our players' safety must override all other considerations."
