Agassi makes himself available for Davis Cup clash

Andre Agassi has made himself available for the United States' Davis Cup tie against Chile in California next month.

Agassi took himself out of consideration for the U.S.'s first-round win over Romania in February because he had just come back from an ankle injury.

But the 35-year-old eight-times Grand Slam champion said he believes his game will come good for the grass court home tie from Aprril 7-9 and is hoping captain Patrick McEnroe considers him.

"If Patrick concludes that I'm his next best option and he can convince me of that, then I would play," Agassi told reporters from The Pacific Life Open, where he is the eighth seed.

McEnroe will face a tough decision in picking the two singles players for his team.

Since he took over as captain six years ago, McEnroe has chosen world number three Andy Roddick to play on every one of his teams when he's been healthy, and with the rise of James Blake to number 14 in the rankings, there might not be a spot for Agassi, the second most successful player in US Davis Cup history.

Blake, Roddick and the world number one doubles team of Bob and Mike Bryan led the US to a 4-1 victory over Romania.

But Agassi feels he might earn himself a spot on the squad with strong performances at the Pacific Life Open and in Miami at the end of the month.

"A lot can go right for anybody in these next few weeks," Agassi said.
