Mixed day for Indian women in Uber Cup

Indian women had a mixed day as they trounced Pakistan 5-0 after losing a thrilling tie 2-3 against Hong Kong in the Uber Cup badminton championship in Jaipur on Thursday.

India, who went down to Hong Kong in the morning session, took just over an hour to pack off Pakistan and kept alive their hopes of qualifying for the finals of the world team badminton championship.

In the Thomas Cup, India were off to a flying start clinching all the three singles to sweep aside Singapore 4-1.

Seasoned Aparna Popat won her first singles against Sara Khan 21-8, 21-7 of Pakistan in just 15 minutes.

Saina Nehwal took a minute less to dispose off Aisha Khan 21-6, 21-5 and Aditi Mutatkar who replaced Trupti Murugande for the third singles, thrashed Asma Butt 21-17, 21-5 to clinch the tie 3-0.

Later in the doubles match, Jwala Gutta and Shruti Kurian trounced Asma Butt and Uzma Butt 21-5, 21-8.

In the last match, Meenakshi B R and Aparna Balan faced no opposition from Farana and Manzoor Saina as they got past them 21-8, 21-9 to complete the rout.

India who had pulled off a thrilling victory against Thailand yesterday, were once again on the course of causing an upset against second seed Hong Kong but lost the decider.

Aparna Popat lost 21-10, 21-10 to Wan Cheng in just 22 minutes. Trupti Murugunde too could not live up to expectations and went down 18-21 15-21 against Yip Pui Yin.

Saina stunned Wong Sin Yee 21-6, 21-4 before the doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Shruti Kurian restored parity with a 22-24, 21-19, 21-9 win against Koon Wai Chee Lousia and Li Wing Mui. With the scores leveled at 2-2, B R Meenakshi and Aparna Balan went down 10-21, 12-21 in the last doubles match.
