Lampard hopes to start afresh

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard relished his goal for England in midweek but said he is aware he will have to score more this season to get over a disappointing World Cup.

Lampard scored the second goal in England's 4-0 win over Greece in a friendly international in Manchester on Wednesday on Steve McClaren's debut as coach.

"One game doesn't make or break you," said Lampard.

"But it was nice, you could see I was happy with it, particularly because it was a deflection and that was the sort of goal I would have died for at the World Cup."

Chelsea's top scorer last season from midfield, Lampard failed to find the net at the World Cup in Germany in performances that were well below the standard he has achieved for Chelsea in two successive Premier League championship wins.

"You'd be a fool to think you'll go through your career without any little blips, things going against you," he was quoted as saying at Thursday's launch of his autobiography, Totally Frank.

"You have to come through stronger," he said in remarks posted on Chelsea's official website on Friday.

"I could have hidden away in the World Cup and not try and get forward and score goals, but I didn't. And that's the attitude I'll take now and try and continue where I left off in the last few seasons."

Chelsea embark on a quest for a third successive league title on Sunday when they host Manchester City, but Lampard said Jose Mourinho's squad are not talking about ultimate victory in the Premier League or the Champions League.

"We have to look to start the season well, and when the Champions League starts we have to look to qualify for the next stage, and we have to break it down like that and try and go as far as we can in everything," he said.

"I do feel determined and really hungry for the season, I feel determined to be personally as good as I know I can be, and to be part of a team that's successful, and for my England career to be successful."
