Australia have lodged a formal complaint with FIFA over the Bastian Schweinsteiger tackle that has ended Tony Popovic's involvement in the Confederations Cup.

"I have to say that the tackle was a disgraceful tackle from (Germany's) Schweinsteiger," Australia boss Frank Farina said at a news conference on Friday.

"We've made an official complaint about it because it looks like Popovic won't take any more part in the tournament. He's out.

"For me, when you talk about Fair Play, that's unacceptable."

Popovic was forced off in the 57th minute of Australia's 4-3 defeat in their first Group A game on Wednesday after Schweinsteiger's tackle left the defender with an injured ankle.

Farina said he was doubtful anything would come of the complaint in the short term but added that he hoped it might prevent similar incidents in the future.

"I don't think anything can be done," Farina said. "It's just to put it on record. You know, we're all professionals. I don't think anything can be done but if it stops those sort of tackles happening again then it's served its purpose.

"I'm not sure what the disciplinary process is but obviously that's up to FIFA."

Jon McKain, who replaced Popovic in the Germany game, is likely to keep the job against Argentina in Australia's next match in Nuremberg on Saturday.
