TFA rally to hold Sporting Clube

The second day's proceedings in the Durand Cup football tournament failed to provide a winner as both the matches ended in draws.

Two late goals ensured that Tata Football Academy shared two points with fancied Sporting Clube de Goa in a 2-2 draw, while Assam Rifles needed a penalty to salvage a 1-1 draw against Kolkata's Mohammedan Sporting.

Sporting had only themselves to blame for missing out on full three points as they became complacent after going two goals up.

In the end they were lucky to snatch a point, thanks to their custodian Luis Baretto, who saved a penalty, taken by Naoba Singh.

Trailing 0-2 till the 80th minute, the Jamshedpur team took full advantage of a slack Sporting defence and scored twice in the last 10 minutes.

Substitute Vimal Pariyar scored in the 81st minute to put TFA back in the match.

A long floater from the TFA half saw Sporting defender Mathew Gonsalves fail to clear properly. Pariyar, who had substituted Bimal Minz at half-time, trapped the ball and, after taking a few steps, lobbed it into the goal over advancing goalkeeper Luis Baretto.

The hard-working Lalam Puia made it 2-2 for the TFA in the 89th minute.

For the Goan side, which led 1-0 at half-time, both goals were scored by captain Dudu MacPherlin, in the sixth and 59th minutes.

Dudu's first goal was a beauty. Chidi Edeh sidestepped his marksman after receiving a pass from Joseph Pereira and fed the Sporting skipper, whose left-footer from top of the box, after outrunning a rival defender, went past advancing TFA goalkeeper Harmanjot Singh into the net.

Dudu's second goal was due to a defensive lapse. Rival defender Warun Deep misread a long ranger from the Sporting half and was deceived by the bounce of the ball as Dudu capitalized on the opportunity and slotted home.
