Rusedski fined for outburst

Greg Rusedski escaped with a $2,500 (1,500 pounds) fine following his foul-mouthed tirade at an umpire during his second round defeat by American Andy Roddick at Wimbledon on Wednesday.

Briton Rusedski could have been fined a maximum $10,000 (6,000 pounds) for his outburst, which was broadcast to millions of television viewers.

But tournament referee Alan Mills announced the lenient punishment after a meeting with Rusedski on Thursday.

"I have made a reasonable investigation into the conduct of Mr Rusedski and have decided to fine him the sum of $2,500 for his audible obscenity," Mills said.

Rusedski, who lost 7-6, 7-6, 7-5, was infuriated when Swedish umpire Lars Graff did not order a point to be replayed in the third set after a spectator called out during a rally.

Mills said Graff was "absolutely correct", pointing out that under the rules "crowd noise 'out' calls from spectators and other similar distractions are not considered a hindrance and the point should stand as played".
