Roddick faces $20,000 fine for late withdrawal

American Andy Roddick pulled out of the Indian Wells Masters on Monday with the flu and will have until Wednesday to be examined by tournament doctors or face a $20,000 fine.

Roddick, seeded 11th at Indian Wells, lost 6-4 4-6 6-4 to Italy's Davide Sanguinetti in the final of the International Tennis Championships in Delray Beach, Florida on Sunday but was in obvious distress as he vomited at least twice during the match.

Complaining of a fever and a chest infection, Roddick immediately returned to his home in nearby Boca Raton but now faces a gruelling across country flight to be checked by Indian Wells' tournament doctors or be fined.

ATP rules state that players will be fined $10,000 for late withdrawals, doubled if the player is seeded.

Had Roddick retired from the final against Sanguinetti he would not be fined or required medical clearance from Indian Wells doctors.

The 19-year-old American earned $30,000 for his appearance in the Delray final but will have to give up $20,000 in fines if he refuses to make the trip to California.
