Chanu gives India three more lifting gold

Sydney Olympian Sanamacha Chanu proved too strong for the rest of the field as she made a clean sweep of the gold medals at stake in the women's 53 kgs weightlifting competition on Wednesday.

Following Kunjarani Devi's sweep of three gold medals yesterday, it was Chanu's turn to steal the limelight. The Manipur girl lifted a total of 182.5 kg to leave second-placed Natasha Barker of Australia (175 kg) and bronze medallist Seen Lee (162.5), also of Australia, way behind.

Chanu had a lift of 82.5 kg in snatch and 100.0 kg in clean and jerk.

Also adding to the medal tally was Chitradurga Kumar Padmaraju, who won a bronze in the men's up to 69 kg snatch. He had a combined lift of 282.kg.

Tientcheu Dabaya, with a lift of 310.0 kg won the gold, Muhammad Irfan of Pakistan (310.0 kg) bagged the silver and Stewart Cruikshank of England (297.5 kg) took the bronze.

S Sunaina won three bronze medals in the women's 58 kg category, which was won by Maryse Turcotte of Canada with a lift of 202.5 kg. Michaela Breeze of Wales lifted 200.0 kg for the bronze. Sunania had a combined lift of 192.5 kg.
