Edwards jumps best of season in Stockholm

Britain's world champion Jonathan Edwards set a world best for the season of 17.78 metres in the triple jump at the Stockholm grand prix athletics meeting on Tuesday.

Edwards produced his best form of the year to hold off Swedish rival Christian Olsson, who jumped 17.39 in second, with Belarus's Aleksandr Glavatskiy in third on 17.09.

"Tonight was great, the best I've jumped for a year," Edwards said. "It was solid, good footwork, I could have had an 18-plus metres tonight if I had needed it."

In the women's pole vault, one of the non-Grand Prix events, Russia's Svetlana Feofanova set a European record of 4.78 metres, beating German Annika Becker's old record set 10 days ago by one centimetre.

American veteran Gail Devers maintained her excellent form with victory in the 100 metres hurdles in 12.42.

The American, who won Rome's Golden League race last week, crossed the line ahead of Jamaican Bridgette Foster (12.49) with American Anjanette Kirkland, the reigning world champion, finishing third in 12.63.

"I was happy with the race," Devers said. "(But) The race was not the best for me, I felt kind of up and down, I knew it was going to be a great competition.

"It was about getting out front and staying in front. They keep me on my toes, these young girls."
