Hingis to miss U.S. Open

Former world number one Martina Hingis will not enter the U.S. Open, the final Grand Slam of the year, the WTA said on Friday.

Hingis, who is recovering from ankle surgery, will miss the July 15 deadline for entry into the tournament, the organisation said on its website www.sanexwta.com.

"Representatives for Hingis indicated that the former World number one would not submit an application to play in the U.S. Open by the July 15 entry deadline," a statement on the website said.

The Swiss world number four had to withdraw from both the French Open and Wimbledon because of the surgery that was performed in May to repair ligaments in her left ankle.

Hingis has also been forced to withdraw from several build-up tournaments in North America because of the surgery though the WTA said she hoped to resume playing soon.

She has won five Grand Slam titles and reached the final of the Australian Open earlier this year, losing to defending champion Jennifer Capriati despite holding four match points.
