Mixed fortunes for Sania

It was mixed fortune for the Hyderabadi lass Sania Mirza as she won the doubles match but lost the singles in the quarter-finals of the Victorian Grade II girls championship played at Traralgon, Australia on Monday.

Sania, who was top seed in the tournament, played a three-hour marathon match, losed tamely to Australian Darya Ivanov 1-6, 0-6.

Earlier, the Indian girl defeated Annabel Stefanchuk of Australia 6-3, 6-0 in the first round; Daniella Dominikovic of Australia 7-6(3), 6-2 in the second and 16th seeded Diana Julianto of Indonesia 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the third round.

In the doubles, a tired looking Sania playing with Linda Smolenakova of Slovakia defeated Casey Dellacqua and Dubravk Cupac of Australia 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

In the semi-final the second seeded Sania and Linda will take on eight seeded Katja Blocker of Germany and Hanna Nooni of Sweden. Blocker and Nooni defeated third seeds Kelly Anderson and Lizaan du Plessis of South Africa 6-4, 6-3 in their quarter-final match.

Other Indian girls in the draw crashed out early. Sasha Abraham lost to Casey Dellacqua of Australia 2-6, 1-6 in her first round match, while 13th seeded Megha Vakharia lost to the fourth seed Nina Bratchikova of Russia 5-7, 4-6 in the third round.

In the boy's section also all the Indians lost early on. 16th seed Amanjot Singh went down 2-6, 3-6 in the first round to Artem Sitak of Russia; Rohan Gajjar lost to fourth seeded Clement Morel of France 2-6, 1-6 in the second; Rishi Behl lost to Tom Pocock of Great Britain 3-6, 2-6 and Sujay Reddy lost to Foti Fotakis of Australia 4-6, 6-7(6) in the first round.

In the doubles, eight seeded Rohan Gajjar and Amanjot Singh lost to Lars Poerschke of Germany and Artem Sitak of Russia 4-6, 5-7. Rishi Behl partnering with Yu-Da Shieh of Taiwan went down to the second seeded pair of Teimouraz Gabashvili of Russia and Yordan Kanev of Bulgaria 5-7, 3-6, while Sujay Reddy and Leon Soonalole lost to Australian pair of Strahinja Bobusic and Greg Chaine 0-6, 1-6.
