BSF, Army XI score big wins

A glut in goals marked the start of the pre-quarter-final league-cum-knock-out stage of the Durand Cup football tournament, with Army XI drubbing Delhi's Tarun Sangha 6-0 and Border Security Force outclassing Indian Navy 4-0, in Delhi, on Saturday.

In Group II, the army team made mockery of the Tarun Sangha defence and scored at regular intervals as they led 3-0 at half time.

Striker Thiruvakarsu (18th and 39th minutes), right half S Gurung (26th and 73rd) and substitute Raghu (87th and 89th) scored for the armymen. The scoreline could have been bigger had it not been for some brilliant saves by Bisawajit Das under the Sangha bar.

In the other match, in Group I, BSF right half J Ouseph, who constantly moved to the upfront, scored a brace.

BSF, whose territorial supremacy was never in doubt however, had to wait till the 33rd minute to draw first blood, when Ouseph banged home.

Skipper D S Negi scored the second goal in the 52nd minute, followed by one more from Ouseph, in 62nd minute. Santosh Kujur rounded off the tally in 75th minute.
