Shirur fourth, Vedpathak eighth: World Cup shooting

In a disappointing show by Indian shooters, Suma Shirur finished fourth while the country's best bet, Anjali Vedpathak was a distant eighth in the ISSF World Cup shooting championship at Shanghai on Monday.

It was China's Gao Jing who did the host country proud by grabbing the gold in the women's 10 metre air rifle event. The veteran marksman, beaten to second place in the Sydney Olympic Games, scored 400 points to finish first in the preliminary round and registered 101.6 points in the final for the winning total of 501.6 points.

South Korean Sun Hwa Seo was placed second while Chinese Du Li was third.

With the victory, Gao qualified for the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004, the official Xinhua news agency reported from the east China metropolis, Shanghai.
