Bharti hopes India can host 2012 Olympics

Ms.Uma Bharati, Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports expressed the hope that India gets the opportunity to host the 2012 Olympics. She is very confident that India would be able to do it.

She also clarified that the reason for the cancellation of the Afro Asian games which were to be held from 3rd to 11th November was because of the great American tragedy and not due to the unpreparedness of India.

Talking on the role of sports, Ms. Bharati, said it was an important medium in bringing about peace and harmony in society other than just contributing towards physical fitness and recreation.

Sports transcends all barriers of social, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, age and gender and helps one to understand people nationally and internationally, she added.

In order to be able to achieve this objective she announced the formulation of a National Sports Policy which was cleared a week back by the Cabinet. The government she said, was committed to the promotion of Sports and for this they were trying to make it an integral part of the School education curriculum.

The process of involvement in sports by all is already there through the efforts of IOA and National Sports Federation and the Industrial Houses.
