Henin injury hands Hawaiian title to Testud

Sandrine Testud of France claimed her first major title for nearly three years when Justine Henin retired injured during the final of the $140,000 Big Island Championship on Sunday.

Trailing 3-6 0-2, the top-seeded Belgian was forced to pull out with a thigh strain.

World number eight Henin, 19, needed two injury timeouts during the match. She had her thigh wrapped in the first and retired after the second.

The teenager's misfortune meant that 29-year-old Testud picked up her third career title and first since October 1998, when she beat Lindsay Davenport at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Germany.

Second-seeded Testud also avenged her defeat by Wimbledon runner-up Henin in the final of the Canberra International in Australia last January.

Although she reached the fourth round at the French Open and Wimbledon, world number 17 Testud struggled through the middle part of the season, but a return to the hard courts has helped her regain some form.

Testud never dropped a set on the way to claiming the $22,000 first prize in Hawaii.
