Seven Indians in quarters

Seven Indians joined Ipok Senglu of Turkey in the quarter-finals of the Indian Oil Servo ITF women's tennis championship in Madras on Wednesday.

Second seed Rushmi Chakravarthi, Sonal Phadke, eighth seed Archana Venkataraman, Karishma Patel, Ankita Bhambrii, Boda Nishchella Reddy and Radhika Tulpule (all unseeded) made it to the last eight stage.

Tulpule won her match against Christina Zachariadou of Greece after the latter gave up due to stomach cramps with the score 4-6, 6-4, 4-0, while Archana defeated Pichaiya Laosirichon of Thailand 6-2, 6-0.

Maharashtra's Tulpule dropped the first set narrowly 4-6. She broke her rival in the third game but Zachariadou broke back in the sixth and tenth games for the set.

However, Tulpule got into form in the second set. The rivals traded breaks before Tulpule led 4-3 with a break and then went on to win the set. In the third also, Tulpule led 4-0 before Zachariadou, who developed stomach cramps, could not continue and conceeded.
