Shailesh Soni

Junior India tennis star Sunil Kumar Sipaeya moved in the second round of the boys' singles at the US Open, defeating Stephen Amritraj of the United States 7-5, 6-3 in a first round match on Monday.

The Indian will face Komlavi Loglo of Togolese Republic in the second round. Loglo upset 14th seed Lionel Noviski of Argentina 6-3, 6-2 in his first round match.

The first set was very closely fought till the Indian took control in the ninth game. Sunil had Stephen on deuces at 4-4, going for the crucial service-break, but the American held his serve. Sunil got the vital break in the 11th game, but Stephen made him struggle to take the set. The Indian converted his third set point to go up 7-5.

In the second set, Sunil had Stephen down 0-40 in game three and broke him. But the Indian was in trouble facing a 30-40 break attempt, at 4-3. But he saved it and went up 5-3. That was the last bit of resistance Stephen showed as he fell to 15-40 on serve in the next game and lost the match.

In the boys' doubles, Sunil Kumar and Jacob Olson of New Zealand lost in the first round against the Austrian pair of Daniel Kollerer and Stefan Wiespeiner 6-3, 3-6, 3-6.
