Bopanna/Rugimbana in quarters

Shailesh Soni

Young Indian Rohan Bopanna moved into the doubles quarter-finals of the Barmera Australian Unity International F6 Futures event, being played at Barmera, Australia, on Tuesday.

Bopanna, partnering Ronnie Rugimbana of Tanzania, defeated Australian wildcards Chris Guccione and Anton Klaric 7-5, 7-6(3) in the first round match at the Barmera Tennis Club, Hawdon Street, Barmera, South Australia.

The duo now will face the winner of the match between two Australian teams, top seeds Ben Ellwood / Dejan Petrovic and Andrew Derer / Matthew Yeates.

Bopanna and Rugimbana had lost in the first round of the doubles qualifying event at Berri, last week.

In the singles, Bopanna will face wildcard Todd Reid of Australia. Reid, ranked 1023 on the ATP, is a promising Australian junior.

Bopanna had lost in the semi-final of the singles event at Berri, last week.

The Indian moved up 10 places in the ATP rankings to 637 this week. He will move further up when the rankings come out next week after the points from the last week's event are added.

In the Tuesday's first round singles matches, all the four seeded players moved ahead. Last week's losing finalist in Berri, eighth seeded David McNamara won his first round match over fellow-countryman Paul Podbury 6-4, 6-4. Fourth seed Irishman Peter Clarke defeated Jay Gooding of Australia 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Sixth seeded Alun Jones of Australia accounted for Victorian junior Clint Letcher 6-4, 6-1, while fifth seeded Todor Enev of Bulgaria defeated Ronald Rugimbana from Tanzania in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
