Bopanna loses in semis

Shailesh Soni

Young Indian Rohan Bopanna lost in the semi-finals of the Berri Australian Unity International F5 Futures event, being played at Berri, Australia, on Saturday.

The Indian, ranked 643 on the ATP, lost to seventh seed David McNamara of Australia 4-6, 6-7(4).

Earlier on Friday, the Indian had defeated Australia's number two junior from Sydney, Ryan Henry 7-6(4), 6-3 in the quarter-finals.

It was a more traditional grasscourt match with both players serve and volleying, and in the end the Melbourne lad continued his good form by winning his seventh match of the week.

McNamara's win has now set up an all-Australian final. He will face eight seed Victorian Joe Sirianni, who upset the fellow-countryman top seed Jaymon Crabb 6-3, 6-4 in the other semi-final.

The semi-final appearance gives Bopanna six ATP points. He now will play at the Barmera event, also in Australia, next week.

In another tournament, Mustafa Ghouse crashed out of the $10,000 ITF F1 Futures event in Ha Noi, Vietnam.

Ghouse lost to Toshihide Matsui of Japan 6-7(3), 3-6 in the quarter-finals.

In the other quarter-final matches, top seed Aisam Qureshi of Pakistan defeated Johan du Randt of South Africa 6-4, 6-4; en-Hsun Lu of Taiwan got past Seung-Hun Lee of Korea 5-4 (ret) and sixth seed James Auckland of Great Britain defeated Wei-Jen Cheng of Taiwan 6-2, 6-3.
