Heineken Classic can't afford Tiger

World number one Tiger Woods will not be invited to take part in the Heineken Classic at the Royal Melbourne course in January 2002 because he demands too much in appearance fees, promoter Tony Roosenburg said on Wednesday.

"I've never invited him yet because we can't afford him. He's out of our league at this stage," Roosenburg told Reuters.

"At some stage when he doesn't want three or four million appearance money we can hopefully get him for an amount we can afford," he said.

But Roosenburg said he was hopeful that one day Woods would return to the course where he played in the United States side which lost to the Internationals in the 1998 President's Cup.

He also said that the $1.4 million event, sanctioned by the Australasian and European PGA Tours, would feature the President's Cup layout next year.

"This layout was tried and tested for the first time during the President's Cup and proved to be an enormous success," Roosenburg said in a statement.

"With holes 16, 17 and 18 situated around the central clubhouse area, it creates an exciting atmosphere for the final groups down the home stretch."

Roosenburg said former world number one Greg Norman was confirmed for the event.

Former winners of the event include Australian Robert Allenby (1994), Briton Ian Woosnam (1996) and New Zealand's Michael Campbell (2000 and 2001).
