Kalmadi withdraws IAAF candidacy

Asian Amateur Athletic Association president Suresh Kalmadi of India has withdrawn his candidacy for president of the world governing body, the International Amateur Athletic Federation said on Wednesday.

Kuwait's Eisa al Dashti will now be the only candidate opposing acting president Lamine Diack of Senegal at the IAAF congress scheduled for July 31 to August 2.

The congress immediately precedes the Edmonton World championships, opening on July 3.

Diack, formerly the IAAF's senior vice-president, took over as acting president following the death of Italy's Primo Nebiolo on November 7, 1999.
