Australia beat Brazil

Australia wrapped up an impressive Confederations Cup football campaign with a 1-0 win over Brazil in the third-place playoff match on Saturday.

The only goal came six minutes from the end when Sheffield United's Shaun Murphy stole in behind Brazil's defence to head home Stan Lazaridis's free-kick.

The win was the second upset caused by the Australians in the tournament. Frank Farina's side had earlier beaten an under-strength France before eventually going out to Japan in a semifinal they had dominated.

Brazil fielded a team missing most of their top players -- such as Rivaldo, Romario and Cafu -- but still had most of the best chances as Australia withstood a second-half onslaught before grabbing an unlikely winner.

Australia were also without several key players, including Brett Emerton, John Aloisi and captain Paul Okon, who had returned home for family weddings.
