Olympic champion, top seed both bow out

Ji Xinpeng Ji Xinpeng, the Olympic gold medal winner in Sydney, and Malaysia's Roslin Hashim, seeded one, both lost in the world badminton championships second round on Wednesday.

The big names were both beaten by lesser known players from Hong Kong. Agus Hariyanto overcame Ji 12-15 15-11 15-4 and Tam Kai Chuen swept aside Hashim, also ranked one in the world, 17-15 15-5.

The winning duo continued a good run for Hong Kong who last week clinched promotion to division two of the Sudirman Cup mixed team event.

Chuen said: "My dream was to reach the last 16. This is fantastic."

Meanwhile, Europe's top hope Peter Gade of Denmark impressed with a 15-7 15-1 victory over Sweden's Martin Hagberg. The number two seed, who also did well in the Sudirman Cup, looked in good shape and could go a long way.
