Manjusha Kanwar qualifies

Four-time national champion Manjusha Kanwar qualified for the main draw of the World badminton championships being played at Seville, Spain.

Manjusha took 44 minutes to defeat Li Li of Singapore 9-11, 11-6, 11-6 in the finals of the qualifying stage.

She will now face Marina Andrievskaya of Sweden in the first round of the main draw.

In the men's singles, Sidharth Jain and Chetan Anand lost in the finals of the qualifying round. Jain lost to Kazuhiro Shimogami of Japan 5-15, 4-15 in a match which took 30 minutes, while Anand lost to Boonsak Polsana of Thailand 13-15, 15-13, 5-15 in a tough match lasting 55 minutes.

Now, India's hopes in the men's singles will rest on Pulella Gopichand and Abhinn Shyam Gupta. Both have got direct entries. In the first round, Gopichand will face Jens Roch of Germany, while Gupta will face top seed Roslin M Hashim of Malyasia.

In the men's doubles qualifying finals, Jaseel Ismail and Markose Bristow lost to Koreans Lin Jae Jin and Chung Jae Sung 6-15, 15-13, 5-15.

Thomas Sanave and V Diju remain the only Indian challenge in the main draw for the men's doubles. They will face Petr Martinec and Jan Frohlich of the Czech republic in the first round.

In the ladies doubles qualifying finals, Shruti S Kurian and Gutta P Jwala lost to Chien Yu-Chin and Cheng Wen-Hsing of Taipie 4-15, 6-15.

In the mixed doubles, V Diju and P V V Lakshmi qualified for the main draw along with Jaseel Ismail and Madhumita Bisht.

Diju and Lakshmi defeated Njordur Ludvigsson and Ragna Ingolfsdottir of Israel 15-5, 15-7 in the finals of the qualifying round.

They will now face the British pair of Graham Hurrell and Sarah Hardaker in the first round of the main draw.

The other pair of Jaseel Ismail and Madhumita Bisht got past Anton Kriel and Michelle Edwards of South Africa 15-5, 15-9 in the finals of the qualifying round.

They will now face the Indonesian pair of Bambang Suprianto and Minarti Timur in the first round of the main draw.
