Top seed Tomashevic out
in first round

India's Mustafa Ghouse and S Kanburgimath crashed out in the first round, in the third leg of the ITF men's Futures tennis tournament in Bangalore on Monday.

Also biting the dust was top seed Dmitri Tomashevich of Uzbekistan, who lost to unseeded Marwan Zewar of Egypt in another first round match.

Zewar won 6-4, 6-4 in a 74-minute encounter, thus avenging his defeat in the second leg at Calcutta, where he had gone down 3-6, 6-2, 6-7 (4-7).

The gritty Egyptian, who started on a rousing note, secured crucial breaks against Tomashevich, ranked 367, at the right time, to clinch his place in the pre-quarters.

Indians had a bad day, with Mustafa Ghouse losing to second seed Martin Spottl (Austria) 4-6, 2-6 while James Nelson (GBR) defeated Shivshanker Kanburgimath 6-4, 6-3.

Also moving into the pre-quarters were Viktor Bruthans and sixth seeed Juraj Hasko (both of Slovakia), eighth seeded Dmitri Mazur (Uzbekistan), and Denis Gremelmayr of Germany.

Bruthans downed compatriot Tomas Janci 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, Hasko beat Austria's Andreas Fasching 6-1, 6-4, and Mazur defeated Patrick Knobloch of Germany 6-4, 6-3.

Gremelmayr came from behind to win against Fred Hemmes of the Netherlands 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

In the ITF Futures finals in Calcutta on Saturday, Joraslav Levinsky beat Martin Spotti 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3) to win the singles title and a purse of $1,300, while Syed Fazaluddin and Dmitri Tomashevic of Uzbekistan beat Joraslav Levinski and Michal Navrati in the doubles final 7-6(8-6), 6-2.
